    Jason Rogenes

I was at Carl Solway Gallery a few weeks back, and was really impressed with this installation piece by Brooklyn-based artist Jason Rogenes. "Stargazer 5.10," is made from manufactured Styrofoam packing inserts, and backlit with florescent tube lighting.

    Elaine Bradford

I really dig Houston-based Elaine Bradford's work; it's a great combination of fascinating, funny, creepy and altogether unexpected. I won't even attempt to describe it any better than what's on her site..."Her most recent work involves crocheting sweaters for taxidermied animals."

That's some quality stuff right there.

    Brian Dettmer

I've been a fan of Dettmer's work for a while because it integrates a few of my favorite things: typography, old books, 19th century engravings, collage and craftsmanship. Toomey Tourell Fine Art in San Francisco has a nice image collection of his work, although you will need to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see them. Most definitely worth a look.

    Behance Network

I recently set up a portfolio on the Behance Network, which considers itself "a platform for creative portfolios, projects, and collaborations." There is a nice mixture of well-known and lesser-known artists and designers, and most of the work represented seems to range from decent to exceptional quality.

If you're a creative, you might want to consider joining, or, if you're just interested in keeping tabs on contemporary art & design, you might have a good time simply browsing.

    Rick Valicenti

I decided to split one long post into two shorter ones, so it's a two-for-one day.

In honor of yesterday's black and white drawings, and today's post about Thirst, here are some personal works by Thirst founder, Rick Valicenti.

Rick was recently awarded the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) Medal in 2006 for his sustained contribution to design excellence and development of the profession. This medal is the highest honor in the graphic design profession.

Rick Valicenti provides inspiration to his colleagues and mentorship to a generation of students. For the past two decades, Rick has lent his time and energies to college and high school students in the form of workshops and personal critiques on the design industry.

I'm back from my mini summer hiatus.

    Jim Flora

This is a really nice site dedicated to the late illustrator and fine artist Jim Flora. Most widely known for his album cover art of the 1940s and 50s, and as an illustrator of over 15 children's books; Flora had an energetic and playful style that is as contemporary today as it was at its creation.

Jimflora.com combines a store, artist interviews and articles, as well as galleries of work. If you are unfamiliar with Flora, this site will get you acquainted with one of mid-century's finest.

Art Institute of Chicago, The Modern Wing

I'm a few weeks late with the announcement, but nevertheless, my alma mater has opened a brand new Modern Art wing...
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the Modern Wing will provide a new home for the museum's collection of 20th- and 21st-century art. Now a decade in the making, this 264,000 square-foot building makes the Art Institute the second largest art museum in the United States. The building will house the museum's world-renowned collections of modern European painting and sculpture, contemporary art, architecture and design, and photography. The extraordinary scope and quality of these collections will be a revelation; each will be displayed more comprehensively than ever before. The opening of the Modern Wing will allow the Art Institute to take its rightful place as one of the world's great collections of modern and contemporary art.

    Alyssa Pheobus

For some reason, I feel like I’ve already done a post about her work, but quickly scanning through the blog archive, I can’t find that I actually did.

Nevertheless, Alyssa Pheobus has been producing some compelling large-scale text drawings, created using graphite on paper. I really enjoy the contrast between the mechanical rendering of the drawings and the slightly uneven surface of the cotton rag paper.

I grew up in northern Ohio, and every time I go back to visit it seems like there is another architectural mural by designer and illustrator Eric Grohe.

The paintings are really impressive and completely unexpected. Most are located in smaller communities and towns where you just wouldn’t expect to find murals of this size and quality.

    Marietta Hoferer

The New York-based artist has developed a subtle-yet-intricate patterning style that consists of pencil and tape on paper.

I’d like to see the work in person to get a better feel for scale and dimensionality, but based on the images on her site, it appears that lighting would be an important factor in how the pieces are exhibited and perceived.

    The Japan Print Gallery

If you are into 18th to 20th century Japanese Woodblock Prints, then this is a site you will want to bookmark. The Japan Print Gallery in London has an excellent online collection of Japanese prints by some of the period’s most recognizable artists.

I only wish they provided a thumbnail preview, because unless you are an art historian or collector of Japanese prints, it is quite a lot of work to search through without a reference point. The gallery did a great job on the documentation of the work — the color and image sizes are spot-on.

    Title: Replenish the Earth
Medium: Graphite on 104lb. translucent vellum
    Artist: Tom Davie
    Size: 9 x 7 inches
    Date: 2009

In an effort to attract new readers and to encourage the participation of current ones, this original graphite drawing is in search of a new home.

The rules are simple, beginning now, I will keep track of reader comments and whoever has the most as of Friday, March 06, 2009, will find themselves the proud owner of this work — I will even cover the shipping costs.

In order to be eligible, you must:
    1. Have access to a computer, carrier pigeon messages sent to my home will not be counted
    2. Have a porch, mailbox, or P.O. Box so I can send you the drawing
    3. Be at least 14. I’m not fond of sending small children random packages, plus I don’t want calls from any irate parents

    How comments will be counted:
    1. I will moderate all comments, this will allow me to keep track of who posted what, when
    2. Use one consistent comment ID, if you comment under three different names I can’t keep track of you
    3. Anonymous posts will not be counted
    4. Irrelevant one word or spam comments will be discarded
    5. If you view a comment on the site, it means that it has been moderated and counts toward your total

    Where you can comment:
    1. Any post on the studiotwentysix2 blog
    2. Any post on the 30 Drawings in 30 Days site

How will I know where I stand?
    1. Each Friday, the top five commenters will be identified with their totals

When does the commenting period for this drawing close?
    1. Friday, March 06, 2009. 12:00 EST
    2. Any comments made after 12:00 will not count toward your total

I have the most comments, now what:
    1. Sit back and relax, but first give me an address so I can send you the well-earned drawing.

    30 Drawings in 30 Days

    New Project Alert!

Tom Davie: 30 Drawings in 30 Days

In an effort to experiment without hesitation and explore variations in composition, abstraction and letterforms, I have decided to pursue a month-long project entitled 30 Drawings in 30 Days.

Beginning today, and continuing through March 12, I will create and post 30 new works that will be used as inspiration for a future set of larger paintings and drawings.

Each of the 30 drawings will be available for purchase through the 30 Drawings in 30 Days site, or by contacting me directly.

  • Tom Davie: 30 Drawings in 30 Days

  • Bonus Goodness: As mentioned in one of my previous posts, I want to encourage reader comments and participation. As incentive, I will be giving one of my readers a drawing from this project — more details later in the week.

(Note: I will not be posting the 30 drawings here on the studiotwentysix2 blog. To view a new drawing each day, please bookmark and visit the 30 Drawings in 30 Days site.)
