Avant Garde, Issue 2
I was lucky enough to find and purchase seven of the fourteen issues of the influential art and design publication Avant Garde. It may take awhile, but I plan to document each of the issues, starting with number two. Issue two was published in March of 1968. It was edited by Ralph Ginzburg and art directed by the legendary Herb Lubalin. The issue features a screen-printed cover, and a series of twelve Marilyn Monroe-based serigraph (screen) prints by Bert Stern, with various contributing illustrators throughout. onlab
onlab, a Berlin-based graphic design studio that produces a combination of client and self-initiated projects. I quite like the Quarry Workers publication; it has an interesting format and is a great solution for 1-color printing. onlabLabels: graphic design, onlab, site design
KitKat Jesus?
There hasn't been a "religious figures in random objects" post in well over a year, so this group of 25 images from Holy Taco should make up for lost time. By the way, this image of KitKat Jesus is absolutely fantastic. Be Advised : There is a pic with a more-naked-than-not female on the link page of which your grandmother would not approve. 25 Holy Images In Everyday ThingsLabels: Holy Taco, humor, Jesus sighting, KitKat Jesus
Tom on Twitter
There are a few items of note I wanted to share... I now have a twitter account: @tomdavie. Unfortunately I won't be using it to update you on where I am, or what I'm reading, watching or eating, because honestly, my pizza eating schedule is really not that interesting. I will be using the account to automatically feed new updates on the studiotwentysix2 site and blog, as well as Good Type, Bad Type, Well Designed and interactive alley. A one-stop-shop if you will. Good Type, Bad Type was created as part of my introduction to typography teaching process, and although that class finished in December, I will keep the site updated as often as I can. I'm always looking for new work to post, so if you run across something of interest, send the URL my way. Well Designed and interactive alley are also to be used as teaching aids. Well Designed is dedicated to all forms of print, packaging and publication design, while interactive alley is dedicated to site design, movies, title sequences and kinetic typography. Again, if you come across some impressive work, please let me know. As for this blog, the titles of each post are now clickable links; this will make it easier to get the permanent URL for bookmarking and sharing. Letters and Lettering, 1938
While visiting family over the holidays, I stopped into one of my favorite used bookstores, and ended-up with a few spectacular finds. Including this 1938 type style / specimen book by Paul Carlyle and Guy Oring. It's a hardcover Wire-O / double-loop bound book, printed two-colors on cover weight uncoated paper stock. The specimen is around 130-pages of typographic goodness, and I photographed a sampling of 36-pages for your historical enjoyment. Greg White
London-based photographer Greg White has a really beautiful portfolio with an engaging mix of subject matter, including: minimal architecture, portraiture and several complex studio shots. His site design by Tom Munckton is fantastic as well; I love the overall simplicity and bold use of red on the home page. Impressive stuff.
